I had an incredibly traumatic experience at this veterinary office, made significantly worse by the lack of empathy and compassion from the staff. I arrived knowing something was wrong with my dog, but I did not understand how serious it was. Despite the fact that my dog was ultimately dying, I was left for hours in a public waiting area while the veterinarian spoke with other people. There were private rooms available, and patients who arrived after me with non-life-threatening situations were placed in them, yet I was never offered one while receiving devastating news about my dog. The communication was slow and unclear, which made an already heartbreaking situation even more distressing. Once I was finally placed in a room, the call button meant to alert staff that I was ready was not working. I had to repeatedly leave the room and walk back into the public area to get someone’s attention—first to discuss pricing and again when I was ready to say goodbye to my dog. There was also no meaningful aftercare or acknowledgment of what I had just experienced. A veterinary hospital that routinely handles end-of-life situations should understand the emotional weight of these moments and train its staff accordingly. The lack of empathy, communication, and basic consideration made an already devastating experience significantly worse. I sincerely hope the staff recognize how important compassion and emotional intelligence are in this line of work.
